Association’s
Mission
In Brazil, one of the options that seem to be feasible, considering
the end of the present energy sources, is the Biodiesel. The fuel
obtained from vegetal oils, reduces the gas emissions, besides taking
advantage of the big oleaginous seeds plantations that already exist
in Brazil.
The text approved by National Congress on September 14, 2004 opened
the possibility of the Biodiesel use out of the research area, which
means, the use for effective purposes in large-scale. On January
13, 2005, the law number 11,097 regulated the Biodiesel introduction
in Brazilian territory. It stipulated a deadline of 8 years to accomplish
5% product addition to the petroleum diesel. In the law, the term
biodiesel is specified as: “Biodiesel derived from renewable
biomass for the use in internal combustion engines with compression
ignition or, according to the regulation, to generate other kind
of energy, which can substitute partially or totally the fossil
fuels.”
The dimension that the issue has reached brought concerns to different
sectors. Therefore it involved oleaginous producers; biodiesel processing
industries; fuels distributors; automotive industry representatives;
equipment and machines industries; research institutes; professionals
of development, environment control and chemical engineering.
All these stakeholders converged to the foundation of ABIOdiesel
(Brazilian Association of Biodiesel Industries). There are representatives
from all areas above, focusing specially on industries that had
their official commencement of activities in March.
The Soyminas plant, located in the city of Cássia, Minas
Gerais State in Brazil, produces biodiesel from the sunflower seed
and from the turnip.
ABIOdiesel’s mission is primarily to promote and encourage
the entrepreneurs to invest in this highly promising market. Likewise,
the use of alcohol fuel was encouraged when the “Pró-Álcool”
was introduced, the Association intends to do the same with the
biodiesel. Since the project is under implementation and needs huge
investments, the entity primarily invokes those with high economic
power. Obviously it does not exclude medium and small investors,
whose represent a fundamental role to reach our objectives. Hence,
the Association intends to enlarge the integration among those involved
with biodiesel, independently on the category in which the person
belongs to. A national range instrument of great value, it facilitates
the dialogue with governmental agencies and with international partners
in the subject.
